IN two years, the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) has contributed to saving Nigeria’s economy a total of ₦90.60 billion and $1.348 million.

Dr. Pius Akutah, Executive Secretary and CEO of the NSC, made this disclosure as he addressed editors and maritime reporters during a media parley and lunch in Lagos on July 4.

He highlighted the Council’s recovery of over ₦90.60 billion and $1.348 million through Alternative Dispute Resolution since November 2023. This effort included ₦86.06 billion in demurrage payments and savings.

The recoveries are part of a reform agenda to strengthen the NSC’s regulatory role in alignment with the government’s directives.

He reported resolving 295 out of 558 complaints received, highlighting the increasing use of ADR in maritime disputes.

The NSC boss also highlighted tariff reforms that consolidated terminal invoice charges from 18 to six categories to enhance transparency and reduce costs.

Notable achievements included the passage of the Nigerian Port Economic Regulatory Agency (NPERA) Bill, historic statutory funding secured through the 2025 Appropriation Act, and advancements in the National Single Window project.

Efforts in digital transformation were marked by new systems and staff onboarding, aiming to position the NSC as a modern, efficient body in the maritime sector.
