IMPORTERS at Apapa and Tin Can Island ports are facing significant financial losses due to difficulties in returning empty containers, resulting in excessive demurrage and detention charges.
The Africa Association of Professional Freight Forwarders and Logistics of Nigeria (APFFLON) President, Otunba Frank Ogunojemite, criticized shipping companies for inadequate facilities, which cause delays and congestion.
He urged governmental bodies to investigate and enforce operational standards, stating that importers should not bear the financial burden of the companies’ inefficiencies.
Accordimg to Ogunojemite, despite government investments aimed at improving processes, issues like high cargo dwell times remain unresolved, undermining business viability in Nigeria.
