If moves by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to deploy Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology at Nigerian airports to tackle persistent cases of lost, delayed, damaged and misrouted passengers’ baggage are anything to go by, then relief is here for travellers.
For years, baggage handling has been a major concern in the aviation industry due to issues with lost, damaged, or incorrectly sorted bags.
The NCAA is initiating the deployment of an RFID system at Nigerian airports to enhance luggage tracking from check-in to arrival.
This technology is expected to reduce passenger complaints by allowing them to monitor their bags via an application. The system will identify the bag’s journey, flag discrepancies, and prevent misrouted luggage.
NCAA’s Michael Achimugu emphasized that RFID will also improve responses to missing-baggage complaints by maintaining records of the last known locations of the bags.
“If you have landed in Lagos, but your bag is in Enugu, for instance, you can tell the airline specifically where your bag is,” he said.
