IN an effort to enhance security at Nigerian ports, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has initiated a review of security protocols related to ship and port facility interactions. NIMASA has informed all maritime security stakeholders that vessels must submit their Security-Related Pre-Arrival Information (SR-PAI) at least 72 hours before entering Nigerian waters.
The new protocol obliges vessels to provide essential details like the vessel’s name, port of registry, International Maritime Organization (IMO) number, and port facility name. It requires collaboration between the ship and port facility to uphold security duties, including monitoring restricted areas, controlling access, and ensuring continuous surveillance of berthing areas.
The protocol addresses secure cargo handling, ship’s stores delivery, management of unaccompanied baggage, and personal effects embarkation control.
NIMASA cautions that providing false or misleading information may lead to offenses under the Maritime (ISPS Code) Implementation Regulations and could result in delays, denied port clearance, enhanced inspections, or further legal actions.
