THE Association of Bonded Terminal Operators of Nigeria (ABOTON) has warned that the underutilization of local bonded terminals could lead to significant job losses in the maritime sector.
This issue stems from government policies, insufficient cargo allocation, and the dominance of port concessionaires in cargo handling.
ABOTON’s General Secretary, Haruna Omolajomo, highlighted that many terminals in Lagos and Ogun states are underperforming despite investments, with over 40 terminals operating below capacity.
He called for government intervention to ensure fair cargo distribution and support for indigenous operators to protect jobs in the sector.
