THE Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has dismantled over 1,500 illegally parked trucks and unauthorized checkpoints at Apapa port corridors to alleviate traffic congestion and reduce extortion.
Managing Director Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho noted that the operation, in collaboration with security agencies, has led to arrests of key operators of illegal tolls.
The NPA is also employing technology, including digital surveillance cameras, to monitor traffic flow and improve security. Efforts include an upgrade of the Electronic Call-Up System to prevent illegal activities and enhance cargo evacuation, with plans to shift over 30% of containerized cargo via inland waterways and rail services to improve operational efficiency across Nigeria’s ports.
