THE Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) is finalizing strategies for a significant airside rehabilitation and infrastructure renewal programme, estimated to cost over N580 billion for runways at 21 airports.
This initiative will support international and local airport terminals across various geopolitical zones, including Lagos, Abuja, Kano, and Port Harcourt.
Experts indicate that this rehabilitation is part of the Federal Government’s efforts to enhance airport facilities, fostering economic growth, investor confidence, and national competitiveness.
FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs, Mr. Henry Agbebire, emphasized a paradigm shift towards enhancing airside safety infrastructure, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renew Hope Agenda.
He noted that Nigeria’s airport terminals have deteriorated due to increased aircraft movements and lack of investment, with some runways surpassing their design life.
Agbebire highlighted the urgency for rehabilitation projects led by FAAN’s Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, advocating for a philosophy prioritizing safety, resilience, and long-term sustainability over short-term fixes. This approach is seen as essential for economic growth and enhancing national competitiveness.
