NIGERIA and Canada have, for the first time, signed an agreement to expand their air transport framework, enabling direct air services between the two nations.
The deal allows for up to 14 weekly passenger flights and 10 all-cargo flights by designated airlines, improving connectivity and supporting trade, tourism, and education.
This expansion marks a significant upgrade from previous limited arrangements, providing a legal basis for airlines to operate direct services.
Despite the agreement, airlines must meet regulatory and operational requirements before commencing flights.
The initiative aims to strengthen economic ties and facilitate easier movement for travellers and goods between the two countries.
The agreement was signed at the Canadian High Commission in Abuja by Mohammed Ahmed Tijjani, Director of Air Transport Management, representing Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, and Shendra Melia, Canada’s Chief Air Negotiator for Global Affairs Canada.
