MARITIME operators in Nigeria have urged the government and security agencies to implement mandatory verification of all marine vessels operating in Nigerian waters to combat piracy and illegal oil bunkering.
The Tugboat, Fuel Barges, and Seagoing Vessel Association emphasizes the need for stricter control over various types of vessels, including tugboats and tankers.
The association highlighted the exercise will involve vessel owners providing proof of ownership, certificates of registry, tonnage certificates, and other related documentation, which aims to address national security, revenue loss, safety, and environmental concerns linked to rising illegal bunkering incidents.
