PLANS are in progress for a superhighway behind Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos, connecting to Mafoluku, as announced by Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, during a Channels Television programme. The superhighway will be developed as a Public-Private Partnership to improve connectivity around the airport.
“Lagos State is coming to a massive plan. When you are coming from Iyana Ipaja, there will be a bypass by the Lagos State government, a superhighway that will go around the back of the airport and come out around the Mafoluku area. It is a Public-Private Partnership, PPP, because we are also working with them, as they have to now get around concessions. That swamp at the back will now be a super highway to open up that part of Lagos, and we are working with the Lagos State government to make it happen,” he said.
Keyamo assured that Nigeria’s airspace is safe, citing a 91.4 percent score in International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) audits as evidence of improved safety standards. He noted that the low fatality rate from air travel incidents, which account for less than one percent of occurrences, further supports this claim.
He addressed the financial challenges faced by domestic airlines, highlighting government debt relief initiatives and encouraging airlines to adhere to scheduled debt repayments, with some having recently paid 10% of their owed amounts.
