NIGERIA’S domestic aviation industry is experiencing a surge in aircraft acquisitions as local airlines aggressively expand their fleets to meet increasing passenger demand, enhance schedule reliability, and boost their competitive edge.

In June 2026, United Nigeria Airlines received two Boeing aircraft, while Air Peace added one Embraer aircraft to its fleet, for a total of three aircraft delivered to these carriers.

The June aircraft acquisitions through outright purchases suggest hopeful operational prospects, with more aircraft anticipated by year-end.

The development arises from rising passenger traffic and demand for air travel, as airlines strive to address capacity constraints leading to flight delays, cancellations, and higher fares.

Air Peace Chairman and CEO, Dr. Allen Onyema, described the recent aircraft arrival as a crucial milestone in the airline’s growth strategy.

According to him, the E175 aircraft will improve operational flexibility, broaden market reach, and reinforce the airline’s commitment to providing safe, reliable, and efficient air transport services in Nigeria and neighbouring countries.

Chief Commercial Officer of United Nigeria Airlines, Mr Adedayo Olawuyi, said that beyond the airline’s expansion initiatives and new acquisition, they still have more on the way.

According to Olawuyi, United Nigeria Airlines’ plan focuses on expanding both regionally and internationally, particularly aiming to enhance their presence in West Africa with routes including Monrovia, Banjul, Dakar, Abidjan, and Conakry.

Industry analysts indicate that renewed investment reflects growing confidence in the Nigerian aviation market, despite ongoing challenges such as high operating costs, foreign exchange volatility, increasing maintenance expenses, and the escalating price of Jet A1 aviation fuel.
