Customs plan 100% cargo scanning at Onne Port
NIGERIA Customs Service (NCS) will soon implement 100% cargo scanning at Onne Port, Rivers State, aimed at enhancing surveillance on potentially dangerous imports.
NCS spokesperson Abdullahi Maiwada noted that existing scanning has successfully started at Apapa Ports.
The initiative follows a state of emergency declared in September 2024 by the Comptroller General of the NCS, Bashir Adeniyi, due to seized arms and drugs, leading to stricter scrutiny of cargoes.
Maiwada assured that while operations continue at Onne, heightened measures and non-intrusive scanning technology will be employed to prevent illicit items from entering the country. The effort emphasizes the importance of public trust and media collaboration in improving trade facilitation and national security.
