The Delta State Government has strengthened efforts to improve professionalism and service delivery in the public sector with a two-day capacity-building workshop on hospitality, tourism, quality assurance and VIP management. The workshop, organised by the Office of the Head of Service with Hotel Human Capital Strategy Limited (HHCS) as consultants, was held in Asaba under the theme, “Strengthening Hospitality and Tourism Capacity in Public Service: Standards, Supervision and VIP Hosting.”

The programme attracted officers from Ministries, Departments and Agencies involved in public service delivery, tourism, hospitality, official engagements, inspection and event management. Declaring the workshop open, the Head of Service, Dr. Mrs. Mininim Oseji, said the training was aimed at developing common standards and strengthening personnel responsible for official hospitality and public-facing services.

Oseji said the workshop would equip selected officers with skills in hospitality management, hotel operations, tourism oversight, meetings and events, as well as food service. She said it would also address hotel and guest house inspection, food safety and hygiene at government events, guest house management and professional approaches to hosting dignitaries.

The workshop featured presentations, practical sessions and participant engagement, with training covering service excellence, food safety and hygiene, hotel inspection, quality assurance, VIP handling, protocol management and professional conduct. A practical CPR session was also conducted by the Nigerian Red Cross team.

Managing Partner and Lead Consultant of HHCS, Engr. Chibuikem Diala, said the programme reflected the growing recognition that professionalism in public service should extend beyond administrative duties to the quality of experience provided to citizens, visitors, investors and dignitaries. A retired Permanent Secretary, Mr. Samuel Diateke, commended the Head of Service for involving retired Permanent Secretaries in the programme.

The organisers said participants were expected to share the knowledge and practical approaches gained with colleagues and teams across their respective Ministries, Departments and Agencies. The programme, they said, underscored the state government’s commitment to strengthening professional capacity and improving the quality of public service delivery.
