foot container of spoilt frozen fish

The Apapa Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has handed over a 1/ 40 foot container of spoilt frozen fish to the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

The Public Relations Officer of the command, Emmanuel Ekpa said that the frozen fish was shipped from the Netherlands to Nigeria last month.

He said the importer declared the item and paid a duty of over N23million but it was discovered during routine physical examination by officers that the frozen fish had spoilt.

Ekpa said the command had invited NAFDAC to inspect the frozen fish and it was also confirmed that the fish is unsafe for human consumption.

Head, Investigation and Enforcement, NAFDAC, Kingsley Ejiofor said the product is damaged and was unfit for human consumption attributing the spoilage to the poor cooling system in the cold chain. “The container contains spoilt and unwholesome frozen fish which is unfit for human consumption and has been forfeited to NAFDAC by Mearsk line in line with the regulatory requirement,” he said.

He said the fish would be destroyed at a dumpsite in Shagamu Local Government area of Ogun State.
