Refereeing body Pro Ref has admitted that an “error of judgment” was made during Manchester City’s 1–0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford.
The organisation contacted Manchester United after the match and acknowledged that VAR officials should have recommended an on-field review before Erling Haaland’s winning goal was awarded.
Haaland’s effort was initially ruled out for offside, but the decision was overturned after a VAR review determined that United defender Patrick Dorgu had played him onside. However, Manchester City’s Enzo Fernandez was in an offside position and appeared to interfere with defender Lisandro Martínez as the ball reached Haaland.
Although Fernandez did not touch the ball, Pro Ref said his movement may have affected the defending action. Under the laws of the game, the goal should therefore have remained disallowed.
Haaland’s second-half strike ultimately secured a 1–0 win for 10-man Manchester City, but the decision has sparked controversy and renewed debate over the use of VAR in football.
