Nigeria’s Super Falcons have been eliminated from the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Cameroon in their quarter-final clash on Sunday.
The defending champions were unable to overturn an early setback after Cameroon’s Myriam Maéva Nyadjou Wamen scored a stunning free-kick in the 19th minute to give the Indomitable Lionesses the lead.
Nigeria dominated periods of the game and pushed aggressively for an equaliser, but the Super Falcons were unable to break through Cameroon’s defence before the final whistle.
The defeat means Nigeria will not retain the WAFCON title they won in the previous edition against Morocco.
Despite their quarter-final exit, the Super Falcons still have an opportunity to secure a route to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup through the inter-confederation playoff tournament.
Nigeria will face South Africa in Casablanca on Thursday, with qualification for the playoff competition at stake.
