Recently, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) revealed its strategic plan transform Nigeria into a globally competitive gas hub. Ekpei Ukam, focal person of the NNPC Gas Master Plan Implementation Assurance Team, unfolded the initiative during a Strategic Panel Session, themed “Realising Future Gas Economies – Building Secure, Integrated and Globally Competitive Hubs”, at the 2026 NOG Energy Week in Abuja.
In his submission, Ukam said that Nigeria already knows where the gas will come from. He stressed that the focus should shift to the successful execution of NNPC Gas Master Plan. The roadmap targets increasing gas production to 10 billion standard cubic feet per day by 2027 and 12 billion by 2030, supported by $60 billion in investments for gas-based industries. Ukam noted that to make Nigeria a secure and globally competitive gas hub rests on three requirements: integrated infrastructure covering pipeline, processing and distribution networks; policy and regulatory alignment to attract investment; and data and assurance to track Gas Master Plan implementation and ensure projects are bankable.
Explaining that building globally competitive gas hub in Nigeria will depend on those three elements. Ukam added that the NNPC Gas Master Plan provides a commercially driven, execution-anchored roadmap to position Nigeria as a competitive gas hub serving domestic industry, the region and international markets.
