The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) have entered into a strategic partnership to fully digitize Nigeria’s Hajj operations.
The agreement was reached following a high-level meeting at NITDA headquarters in Abuja, aimed at creating a seamless, technology-driven experience for Nigerian pilgrims.
Leading the NAHCON delegation, Chairman Ambassador Ismail Yusuf Abbas sought NITDA’s technical expertise, training, and guidance to upgrade the commission’s operational framework. Ambassador Abbas noted that while Saudi Arabia is rapidly moving toward full digital integration by 2030, Nigeria continues to face operational bottlenecks in hybrid registration, payment verification, flight manifest management, logistics coordination, and real-time tracking of pilgrims.
He acknowledged that despite existing tools—such as electronic registration systems, medical tracking, and the GPS-enabled “Hajj Companions” mobile app—the commission’s internal ICT capacity remains severely constrained with only two developers on staff, underscoring the urgent need for staff training and infrastructure development.
Welcoming the initiative, NITDA Director-General Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi emphasized that successful digital transformation extends beyond software deployment to include the holistic integration of people, processes, culture, and technology. He stressed the necessity of building sustainable systems that outlast individual leadership terms, breaking down data silos, and leveraging artificial intelligence for smarter decision-making.
Inuwa added that a modernized framework should deliver end-to-end visibility across the entire Hajj journey, covering everything from initial pilgrim savings to post-pilgrimage logistics.
To support the initiative, Inuwa pledged NITDA’s assistance through technical support, hands-on training, and strict IT project clearance to ensure quality assurance and prevent typical public-sector technology pitfalls. Both agencies agreed to establish a dedicated working relationship to deliver a modern, efficient, and pilgrim-centered digital experience.
