With the activation of Nigeria Postal Services (NIPOST) and the level of patronage in the country, it would generate nothing less than N1 trillion annually to the Federal Government of Nigeria, according to the Senior Assistant Postmaster-General of the organisation, Mr Irimiya Kulawe.
Kulawe who spoke on Thursday during the sensitization workshop organized for NIPOST’s customers within Plateau Territory held at the Federal Secretariat in Jos said, “the agency has gone round preaching for compliance on the stamp duty act in the country and we have noticed improve compliance by some organization and government agencies.
“If government and private organisations in the country can adhere strictly to this act, the federal government would realised nothing less than a trillion naira, even when NIPOST is not a revenue generated agency.”
Mr. Kaluwe pointed out that the agency works in accordance with the enacted Stamp Duties Act of the Country since 1939.
He said, “The act not only empower the agency to sell adhesive stamps to government agencies on various purpose and monitored compliance, it also empower NIPOST to report to appropriate government agency, any organizations that fails to affix N50 stamp on receipts issued in acknowledgement of payment.”
In a welcome address, Area Postal Manager in charge of Plateau Territory Mrs. Danso Olayinka said the workshop was aimed at sensitizing government agencies, private organisations and individuals on the importance of stamp duty.
“Any transaction of cash receipts above N1,000.00 without N50 postage stamps affixed as stamp duty is not valid and we have launched public enlightenment campaign to sensitize the general public on this,” she said.
