Protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos have said that soldiers opened fire at them and killed one of them. Eyewitness reports say that the protesters were all sitting on the floor when soldiers came and opened fire on them. Videos of the pandemonium that resulted as a result of the shootings have gone viral on social media as the protesters. In one of the videos, a lifeless youth was seen on the floor while another shows a young lady who is being attended to by medical personnel trying to revive her. There are unconfirmed reports that up to three people were reported killed.
The protesters also claim that about an hour before the soldiers arrived, that some men in coverall uniforms came and disconnected all the CCTV cameras at the toll gate, a development that portends an ominous sign of what to come as some of the protesters sent warning signals to their compatriots that danger is lurking around. Observers say that the CCTV cameras were removed so that the identity of the soldiers who carried out the shooting will be hidden.
The development followed the declaration of a 24-hour curfew by the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, citing the violence that greeted the #EndSARS protest in the state as reason for the decision. Some of the protesters, who claimed that the timing was short, refused to vacate the protest ground.
