Shehu Sani, a civil rights activist who is one of the newly elected senators from Kaduna State has urged newly installed governors whose states are heavily indebted to quickly set up probe panels to verify the circumstances surrounding the debt burden with a view to recovering stolen public funds.
“State Governors nationwide who inherited heavy debt burden, must constitute panel of experts with terms of reference; to verify the debts and move towards recovering stolen public funds from ex-officials”, Sani said.
The newly elected senator argued in his social media tweets that only a dispassionate, thorough probe and recovery of stolen state funds would stop politicians and public officials from emptying public treasury at the detriment of the governed. “It will be intolerable for the new governments to grant amnesty to thieves and then introducing painful economic measures which will further exploit and impoverish the masses of the people in the name of raising the revenue profile of the states,” he said.
