The Court of Appeal, Abuja has affirmed the judgment of Rivers Governorship Election Tribunal that nullified the election of the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Nyesom Wike.
The appellate court in a judgment delivered on Wednesday morning upheld that the Governor was not validly elected in the April 11, 2015 poll.
The Rivers Tribunal had on October 24 sacked Mr. Wike, ordering a fresh governorship election in the state. But the PDP candidate challenged the ruling at the appeal court.
The Rivers governorship election was heavily criticised by local and international observers for witnessing high incidences of violence before, during and after the election. And shortly after INEC declared Wike the winner of the controversial poll, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Dakuku Peterside and a few other contestants headed to the tribunal challenging the validity of victory of the PDP candidate.
