A Magistrate’s Court sitting in Port Harcourt has remanded one Kingsley Nwachukwu in the custodial centre in the Rivers State capital for allegedly defrauding a medical doctor of N700,000. The 40-year-old defendant was said to have committed the crime in 2019 and had relocated from his previous residence before he was trailed and arrested by men of the Rivers State Police Command in January 2021.
Nwachukwu, in charge sheet number PMC/59C/2021, was charged with misrepresentation and fraud.
The charge read in part, “That you, Kingsley Nwachukwu, and others now at large, sometime in May 2019, at Umuechem village, in the Okehi Magisterial District, but triable in the Port Harcourt Magisterial District, did obtain cash sum of N700,000 only from one Dr Paul Anya with the pretence of partnering him in a dredging business, a representation you know to be false, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 1(1)(C) of the Advance Fee Fraud and other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2004 as applicable in Rivers State.”
The police prosecutor, Umunnakwe Leticia, told the magistrate that it took the police over two years to arrest the suspect, urging the court to apply caution on the issue of bail.
