Gunmen on Tuesday killed two businessmen in Awka, the Anambra State capital. This is happening barely 48 hours after three policemen were killed in Onitsha, the commercial city of the state.
We learnt that the Tuesday incident occurred on the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway by the gate of the Udoka Housing Estate.
A bystander, who did not identify himself, said the victims were shot at close range by the assailants, who did not steal anything from the deceased.
He said, “I saw them. They just shot the two guys, who were businessmen in the area, and drove off. I suspect it’s a case of assassination or business rivalry.”
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Ikenga Tochukwu, said it was a case of rival cults.
He said the attackers drove a Mercedes vehicle and shot the victims, who were walking on the street, around 12.30pm.
“Preliminary investigation showed that it was a case of a cult war. The Commissioner of Police, Tony Olofu, has ordered further investigation into the matter,” he added.
He said the corpses of the victims had been removed from the scene and deposited in a mortuary.
