According to the established hierarchy of ascension to the Ibadan throne, Senator Lekan Balogun, the Otun Olubadan of Ibadan land, may be the next in line following the death of Oba Saliu Adetunji.
This is because the Ibadan system’s hierarchical arrangement is divided into two lines: the Balogun system and the Olubadan (Otun) system.
Olubadans are appointed on a rotating basis to occupy the throne in the event of a monarch’s death. Otun Olubadan and Balogun are the next and most senior players on both lines after Olubadan.
Oba Saliu Adetunji was coronated as the 41st Olubadan of Ibadan on March 4, 2016.
Oba Adetunji was the Balogun of Ibadan land prior to his coronation, indicating that the Otun Olubadan, Senator Lekan Balogun, may be next in line according to the rotational system.
Oba Adetunji, 93, died in the early hours of Sunday at the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan, Oyo state.
