Amid the #EndSARS protests, residents in Lagos have turned their attention to poor power supply and what they termed “favouritism” in electricity distribution.
Residents at Adaloko, Oto-Awori Local Council Development Area (LCDA), on Monday vowed to stop paying their electricity bills until power supply improves markedly.
Putting words into action, angry youths numbering over 100 on Monday went from house to house collecting the October bills of Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) for onward return to the Agbara District of the firm. The area is less than 10 percent metered and experience load shedding.
The youths claimed some staff of the Agbara District of EKEDC collect bribes to distribute more power to another area, Era. It is understood Adaloko and Era come under a load shedding arrangement of one-day off, two days on. But, residents of Adaloko alleged that most times, Eko Disco does not keep to the arrangement.
Citing a recent incident, a leader of the youths in Adaloko, known as Kata, said the area ought to have power supply on Monday, but as at Tuesday, it was still in blackout while Era was enjoying electricity supply.
When Kata put a call to the Marketer in charge of the area, Mrs Rose, she asked why he was complaining and cut the call, further infuriating the residents.
Against this backdrop, the residents, including the youths, vowed to resist any further distribution of bills in the area until there is a marked improvement to power supply.
Attempts to reach the Manager, Agbara District of Eko Electricity Distribution Company were unsuccessful.
