Candidates contesting the November 21, 2015 governorship election in Kogi State have signed a peace accord as part of efforts to ensure a peaceful conduct of the poll.
The peace agreement brokered by the Kogi State Police Command, had in attendance, representatives of 24 political parties fielding candidates for the election and other key stakeholders, including the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Kogi State Police Commissioner, Emmanuel Ojukwu, explained that the initiative was aimed at encouraging political parties, candidates and supporters to avoid violence, hate speeches and all acts capable of provoking breakdown of law and order. “Today’s peace accord is necessitated by the desire and determination of the Kogi State Police Command and stakeholders to ensure and achieve free, fair and credible election which is devoid of violence before, during and after the Kogi State gubernatorial election,” Ojukwu said during the ceremony in Lokoja.
