Liz Truss has been elected as the new leader of the Conservative Party and she’ll assume office as the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom tomorrow.
She defeated Rishi Sunak, a 42 year old fellow member of parliament to clinch the position. Some have argued that Liz became the preferred choice because Sunak is Indian.
During her school days, she was President of Oxford University Liberal Democrats. At graduation in 1996, she joined the Conservative Party.
1996 to 2022 is a long time and she’s held a number of offices beginning with winning election in 2010 as MP for South West Norfolk.
She made her mark in Parliament and continued to climb the ladder of prominence through various positions and offices.
According to reports, Rishi had put up a strong showing and had “over 1.5-million-strong Indian diaspora stood firmly behind the UK-born MP for Richmond in Yorkshire, other sections of the Conservative Party including those who trace their roots to other parts of the sub-continent were expected to be more divided.”
Liz polled 81,326 votes to Rishi’s 60,399.
Liz Struss is now the leader of the Conservative Party and by tomorrow will become the third female PM the UK has had.
