Giwa FC pipped league leaders, Enyimba 1-0 in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) match day 28 clash on Sunday at the Rwang Pam Stadium in Jos.
Captain and central midfielder Charles Henlong scored from the penalty spot in the 74th minute to hand the Tin City club the maximum points and the People’s Elephant its first league defeat in ten games.
The hard fought win against Enyimba takes Giwa FC’s total earnings to 46 from a possible 84 in the 28-week old top flight.
Enyimba, however, maintained top spot on 52 points from 28 matches despite loss while Sunshine Stars slipped in their chase for the league title after a 2-1 defeat against Shooting Stars on Sunday.
Goals from Cletus Itodo and Tope Orelope in the 23rd and 82nd minutes respectively handed the Oluyole Warriors the maximum points against the Akure Arsenal, allowing Warri Wolves to move to second spot after its hard-fought 1-1 draw against Nasarawa United at the Lafia Township Stadium.
Former Lobi Stars midfielder Esosa Igbinoba scored the match opener for the Solid Miners while midfielder Michael Egbeta equalized for Wolves to share the points.
Enugu Rangers were beaten 2-0 by Heartland in another explosive Oriental Derby played at Dan Anyiam Stadium Owerri on Sunday.
The clash witnessed by massive home crowd was thought to be heading to a scoreless draw until Fortune Omoniwari broke the deadlock in the 80th minute before substitute Chidiebere Ajoku doubled Heartland’s lead in the 86th minute to seal the victory for the in-form Naze Millionaires.
Elkanemi Warriors beat Lobi Stars 2-1 at the Karkanda Stadium in Kastina.
Emmanuel Agali fired from close range to open scores for the host on 21st minute while Ogu Michael levelled scores four minutes into second half.
