The Duruji family in Izombe community in the Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State has demanded justice for its son, Charles Duruji, who was allegedly hacked to death at the New Heaven Divisional Police Headquarters in Enugu State.
A member of the family, Sunday Okebata, who spoke to newsmen in Owerri on Sunday, said Charles’ death was suspicious. He called on the Inspector-General of Police to launch an investigation into the killing of the mechanical engineering graduate.
Okebata said, “Charles Duruji, a mechanical engineer, publicity secretary of ISOPADEC youth association and a youth leader in Izombe, Oguta LGA of Imo State, was gruesomely killed on the premises of the Nigeria Police Force, New Heaven Divisional Police Headquarters, Enugu State, on September 28, 2020.
“Charles travelled to the said divisional police office to see his sick fiancée (a senior police officer), who lives in the officers’ quarters. At about 10.30pm Sunday, September 27, according to his fiancée, Charles noticed strange movements close to the entrance of their apartment. He quickly asked her to go into the toilet and lock herself up. Suddenly, their door was hacked down and Charles was dragged out.All she heard were loud screams by Charles, crying, ‘Oh my God,’ three times. Later, neighbours came out after a little calmness and took him to a hospital in a pool of blood, as he had been cut in the head and legs with a cutlass.
“At the hospital, no doctor was in sight, as Charles bled for more than four hours. He died around 5am on September 28.
“Our questions are, how come it was only Charles that died in the attack?
What is security like in a big divisional police office like New Heaven?
“We demand that the police authorities launch investigation into his killing. We demand that his killers be apprehended. This is one death too many.”
