The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Ebonyi State, Francis Nwifuru, on Friday, escaped death, when a truck rammed into his convoy around Amagu community, in the Abakaliki Local Government Area of the state.
The incident occurred when he was returning from the grand finale of the APC campaign rally that took place at Uburu community, in the Ohaozara Local Government Area of the state.
The impact of the accident shattered Nwifuru’s bulletproof SUV, which is now beyond repairs.
It was gathered that the affected bulletproof car ended up hitting an electric pole in the area.
Addressing journalists shortly after the incident, the Director-General of the APC Campaign Organisation, Mr Austin Umahi, described Nwifuru’s survival as an act of God.
According to him, “Yes, there was an accident but the act of God was mightily demonstrated in the sense that we came on the divine mandate. This accident would have been an avoided accident, but unfortunately, we don’t know whether the truck driver was drunk or not.
“I personally narrowly escaped the accident and the next car was our gubernatorial candidate, Nwifuru. The truck driver just crossed the road and the next thing was to put them inside the bush. It is unfortunate but we thank God for everything because our candidate survived.
“Both the driver and two other occupants; the state chairman of our party, Stanley Okoro Emegha, and the former Minister of Culture and Tourism, Frank Ogbuewu, are in good condition.”
Reacting to the development, the Deputy Director of Media and Publicity, Ebonyi State PDP Campaign Council, Moses Idika, prayed to God for the quick recovery of the victims of the accident.
He said, “We also wish to encourage the APC Campaign Council in Ebonyi State to embrace decorum in their affairs. The way and manner their drivers and members are going about their campaign activities is very reckless. They denigrate basic traffic and safety protocols.
“They should know that only God gives power and nothing in life is sacrosanct!
“In the PDP we believe in peace, peaceful electioneering campaigns, and we are sure that God shall give victory to those that the people want.”
