The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has arrested 10 suspects in Aba, Abia State, over alleged adulterated beverages after shutting down the Cemetery Market.

NAFDAC Director, South-East Zone, Martins Iluyomade, revealed suspects in Cemetery Market occupy over 240 traders’ shops, turning them into production centres for large-scale adulteration of beverages and drugs.

“What’s happening here at Cemetery Market, Aba is worse than Boko Haram. We saw how many shops were converted into manufacturing centres for all manner of wines, expensive drinks, and revalidation of the expiry date of products.

“So far, we have discovered 240 shops used for this illegal manufacturing of fake consumables and about 10 persons have been arrested and the arrests are still ongoing”, he said as he ordered the temporary shutdown of the market.

The agency discovered illegal activities involving beverage brand adulteration in the market, conducting a thorough background check without involving its Abia office.
