Former Senate President, Pius Anyim’s presidential bid has received a boost following the decision of the Ebonyi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and a coalition of northern groups to throw their weight behind him. Members of the Ebonyi State Chapter of the PDP vowed to “swim and sink” with him in his decision to run for the 2023 Presidential election.

State chairman of the PDP, Mr Tochukwu Okorie, said this after a meeting of the State Working Committee of the party, in Abakaliki, on Monday.

Okorie said, “The party in the state, Ebonyi, is simply lucky and proud to have Anyim as a citizen of the state.

“Anyim is one Nigerian, who is eminently qualified on his own, irrespective of his state of origin to steer the current rudderless ship of Nigeria into a successful anchor.

“The resolution of the Working Committee of the party to stand with Anyim, is not just because he is from Ebonyi, but because his pedigree is unassailable and his past is an elegant testimony of what his future holds for Nigeria.

“The fact is that Nigeria is in a perilous condition the way it is right now and God always sent his own to the rescue. Marketing Anyim to Nigerians is very easy, because he has rescued Nigeria in the past when the country was faced with similar challenges.

“Recall, the prominent roles Anyim played to stabilise the National Assembly, when its Senate wing, was messed up with what was commonly described then as the Banana peels.”

Similarly, the leadership of the Arewa Concerned Civil Society Organization of Nigeria, met in Kaduna to drum up support for Anyim.

The group said his emergence as President would help unite the country and deal with the current security challenges facing Nigeria.

The coalition which includes: Arewa Youth Assembly for sustainable growth; Arewa Youth and Students Forum; Concerned Northern Forum; and 13 others inaugurated the ‘Anyim Supporters Group’.

Spokesperson of the coalition, Mallam Abdulsalam Kazeem, while addressing newsmen shortly after the inauguration at the Arewa House, Kaduna, said the Anyim has what it takes to deliver. The group also made a case for rotational presidency which it said would go a long way in helping leaders and the citizens build a Nigeria of our dreams.

Kazeem said, “With the rotation of the presidency, we believe strongly that all these agitations for separation will stop not only in the South-East but in other regions since the essence is to quench marginalization and promote unity, brotherhood and pan-Nigerian sentiments.”
