Former Chelsea striker and captain of the Ivorian national team, Didier Drogba has become the latest high profile player to join the Major League Soccer (MLS) after signing a money spinning contract with Montreal Impact.
Drogba, who was released by the Chelsea at the end of the season, will officially join the Canadian club when he receives his Canadian work permit.
The MLS side who are currently sixth in the Eastern Conference broke the news about their latest acquisition via Twitter on Monday night.
“It’s an honour to welcome Didier Drogba to the Impact. From the first conversation I had with him, I felt that he really wanted to play in Montreal,” Montreal Impact President Joey Saputo declared.
“This is one of the biggest days in club history and his arrival to the club will be beneficial in every aspect. He’s had an impact on millions of people since the start of his career and he will continue to do so wearing the Impact colours,” he stressed.
Technical Director Adam Braz added: “We are very excited and thrilled to add to our roster a player with an exceptional career. He’s demonstrated his qualities as a striker at the highest level in Europe. His instinct in front of the goal, his experience and his leadership are all attributes that will help the team on the field.”
Drogba was crowned the Premier League Golden Boot winner twice during his time at Chelsea after bagging 20 goals in 2006-07 and 29 goals in 2009-10. He also won the Premier League four times during two spells at the club as well as four FA Cups, three League Cups and two Community Shields and the UEFA Champions League title in 2012.
Drogba is the fourth highest scorer in Chelsea history and won the golden boot award in 2007 and 2010.
