Not minding the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) by the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, on Sunday, protests amongst Nigerians against the unit for gross human rights abuse, extrajudicial killings, extortion, intimidation and harassment of citizens have continued unabated.
In parts of Lekki, Ketu and Surulere, all areas in Lagos, the #EndSARS protests have continued to rage on in spite of the unit’s disbandment. For most of the protesters, the disbandment was not just enough until something drastic is done to eradicate police brutality.
On the other hand, many Nigerians have also lent their voice in support of the disbanded SARS. For this latter group, the crucial roles SARS played in curbing the crime rate in the country requires commendation rather than the anger and condemnation that have trailed their activities. These Nigerians believe that the unit should be reformed with a view to repositioning them for greater productivity instead of the blanket scrapping.
