Super Eagles coach, SundayOliseh, has confirmed the appointment of Sharks FC defender, Chima Akas as captain of the country’s team for the 2016 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
Akas emerged the new skipper following the omission of Warri Wolves striker, Gbolahan Salami, who led the team during the qualifying series. Salami who emerged the top scorer of the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) last season was omitted from the squad because he was on the verge of sealing a move to an unnamed European club.
Reports from Eagles camp indicate that Paul Onobi, IkechukwuEzenwa or Austin Obaroakpo are in contention for the deputy skipper position.
The 2016 edition of the continental championship kicks off in Rwanda on January 16, with Nigeria playing its first match against Niger Republic on January 18 at the StadeRégionalNyamirambo, Kigali before facing Tunisia and Guinea in Group C.
