Senator Hadi Sirika, minister of aviation, says the runway 18R at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, would be operational soon.
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) had closed runways 18R and 36L in the airport for maintenance work. The agency had said work on the runways would span for eight weeks.
FAAN also assured that normal airline operations would not be affected, as the taxiway B-18L would be used for all flight operations.
Sirika, in a tweet on Saturday, said the 18R runway would opened for use this month as work on the facility would completed soon.
The minister spoke on the project when he visited the site for inspection.
He said the progress on the runway maintenance has advanced, adding that operations should begin before the end of April 2023.
“Just inspected the Lagos international runway (18R), closed for repairs. I am happy to announce that the work has advanced well,” Sirika tweeted.
“We will finish and resume operations before April ends, in sha Allah. The closure was safety critical.”
Sirika also appreciated the public for being” patient and understanding.”
