The price of an aeroplane ticket in Nigeria grew by 97.09% in a single year, data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) shows.
Nigerians who travelled by air in November 2022 paid an average of N73,267.57 for their tickets, according to the Transport Fare Watch report that was recently published. This demonstrates that the average cost of a single flight ticket grew from N73,198.65 in October 2022 by 0.09%.
However, the difference is a staggering 97.09% year-over-year increase in the cost of airline tickets when compared to the average price in November 2021, which was N37,022.97.
The most expensive average airfares for a single flight were N77,100 for Taraba; N76,500 for Delta, and Oyo/Bayelsa: N76,100.
The cheapest average costs for one-way airline tickets were: Niger: N67, 100; Gombe N70,000, and N70,100 for Nasarawa.
A peep into airline ticket prices by zones in Q3 2022, one-way airfare for November 2022 in the North Central region cost N71, 428.57, down from N71, 550 in October 2022 by 0.17%. Additionally, the amount for November 2022 indicates an increase of N36,985.71 by 93.12%.
In the North East, the average cost of a flight for November 2022 is N72,850, a 0.07% reduction from N72,900 in October 2022; a growth of 97.78% from N36,833.33 in November 2021.
The average cost of a flight in North West for November 2022 is N72,928.57, a 0.10% decrease from the N73,000 recorded in October 2022. Additionally, it shows a growth of 98.64% from N36,714.29 in November 2021.
In the South Eastern region, the average cost of an airline ticket was N74,500 in November 2022, up 1.22% from N73,600 in October 2022; a price rise of 100.54% from N37,150.
The average cost of an airline ticket in the South West was N74,300 for November 2022, a 0.09% reduction from N74,366.67.
An airline ticket in the South-South region was N74,166.67 in November 2022, an increase of 0.02% from N74,150 in October 2022. At N37,366.67, the region’s price has increased by 98.48% from November 2021.
Indeed, the cost of plane tickets has increased for the holiday travel period in December 2022. An analysis of Air Peace airline ticket costs shows that, a single flight from Lagos to Benin city, is expected to cost up to N100,000 as of December 30.
