Millions of Nigerians who could not enroll within the stipulated period for the registration of the Biometric Verification Number (BVN) heaved a sigh of relief late in the afternoon of June 30 when the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) extended the duration for the exercise from June 30 to October 31, 2015. “It has become imperative for the CBN to extend the timeline for all bank customers to have the BVN. The deadline for enrollment is hereby extended from 30th June, 2015 to 31th October, 2015. This extension is expected to facilitate a smooth completion of the registration exercise,” CBN said.
The central bank said that the extension became necessary because the BVN registration has now elicited tremendous interest from the bank customers who crowded the banking halls on June 30 in order to beat the deadline. The initial deadline was June 30, 2015. “Furthermore, there is the need to give Nigerian banks’ customers in Diaspora ample time to enroll on the programme. The guideline for there is being finalized and will be released soon,” the CBN stated.
The apex bank warned that any bank customer who failed to utilize the extension to register “would be deemed to have inadequate requirement with respect to know your customer guidelines.”
