Nigeria’s next opponent at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations will be confirmed today (Tuesday).
The Super Eagles are through to the Round of 16 as Group A runners-up.
According to the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF’s) official schedule, this means Jose Peseiro’s men will play the team that finishes second in Group C.
The final positions in Group C will be determined later today.
Senegal currently leads the way in that group with six points from two matches.
However, their last group match against Guinea has significant implications.
A win for Guinea who are second with four points, would propel them to the top of the group. If this happens, Senegal would drop to second place, setting up a showdown with Nigeria in the knockout stage.
However, a draw or a Senegal win would see the Teranga Lions maintain their position at the summit, ensuring Guinea finish second and become Nigeria’s last-16 adversary.
Cameroon, with just one point from two games, must defeat Gambia and hope for favourable results elsewhere.
A significant win for Cameroon, combined with a massive win for Senegal over Guinea, could see the Indomitable Lions leapfrog the Guineans into second place and become the Super Eagles’ opponents.
