Ike Ekweremadu, a former deputy senate president, had his request for bail denied yesterday at the Central Criminal Court, also known as the Old Bailey, and will now spend Christmas and New Year’s Day in jail.
Along with that of his wife, Beatrice, and his daughter, Sonia, his motion for “dismissal of charges” of conspiring to aid the organ harvesting of David Nwamini’s kidney was also denied.
The trial for the Ekweremadus and co-defendant Dr. Obinna Obeta will now start on January 31 by default. By that time, Ekweremadu would have been imprisoned for just over seven months since his June 23 arrest at Heathrow Airport. Ekweremadu and Obeta attended the hearing via video links from their prisons, just like they did on Monday.
