Ahead of the 2023 general election, Social activist, Aisha Yesufu, on Friday, called on Nigerians to commence donations for their candidates.
Yesufu, who made the call in a post on her Twitter handle, maintained that candidates should not be allowed to fund their campaigns.
“Imagine if one million people donated N1000 every week until the election. That will be N1 billion weekly. It can even be a healthy competition to see which state is donating the most. We must put our money where our votes are! We should not expect candidates to fund campaigns.”
Without sounding arrogant, I’m confident of defeating Banky W – Obanikoro
The renowned activist on June 10, 2022, revealed her support for the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi.
Yesufu’s advice can be likened to the discussion on political structure, and which candidate has it in order to win at the polls in Nigeria.
While some maintain that some political parties or candidates lack the structure to compete against other popular parties, funding a candidate of choice can also be seen by some as building a structure. This is as some Nigerians opine that the issue of structure is not given, but can be built.
Also, when a candidate struggles to fund his campaign singlehandedly, he may see himself as not answerable, transparent and accountable to anybody.
