Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu, a former military governor of old Imo and Lagos states is dead. The retired naval officer passed on in the early hours of today, January 13 at an undisclosed hospital. He was aged 78.

Theeconomyng.com gathered that the late military governor had been battling ill-health for a long time before finally succumbing to the cold hands of death, although the cause of death is yet to be made known.

Born in 1943 in Abia State, Kanu got enlisted in the Nigerian Navy in 1962 and rose to the rank of a rear admiral before retiring in 1990. It will be recalled that Kanu had a brief stint with the defunct Biafran Navy in the course of the Nigerian Civil War but later returned to the Nigerian side at the end of hostility.

Best known for his active role during the dark days of military dictatorship following the nullification of the 1993 presidential election believed to have been won by the late MKO Abiola. Kanu’s participation in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) earned him national acclaim and portrayed him as a detribalized Nigerian.

He is survived by his wife and 10 children.
