The number of fatalities in the building collapse which occurred in Obalenda area of Lagos State on Sunday has risen to eight with the discovery of one more corpse. The official spokesman of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Nosa Okunbor, said one more body was recovered by emergency responders while over twenty people were rescued. He averred that while ten people who were mildly injured got on the spot treatment, ten others that were seriously injured were moved to Lagos Island General Hospital.
The collapsed building, situated in Obalenda, Lagos, was a three-storey complex which was still under construction before it caved in around 5;40 pm on Sunday evening. While the cause of the collapse was still yet to be ascertained, it was learnt that some construction workers were busy on the third floor when the entire structure lost balance and collapsed.
It would be recalled that the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) had earlier sealed off the building and stopped all construction works due to some breach in the state’s building regulatory framework. However, the stop-work order was disregarded and the building continued to host some people who assembled there for their Muslim prayers.
