The total value of transactions executed by domestic Investors on the Nigerian Stock Exchange in the first eight months of the year stood at N731bn as against N470.20bn total foreign transactions carried out during the period under review.
This showed that domestic investors outperformed transactions executed by foreign investors by N260.8bn or 55.47 per cent.
As of August 31, total transactions at the nation’s bourse decreased by 8.49 per cent from N103.21bn (about $265.55m) in July to N94.45bn (about $244.27m) in August.
The performance in August this year when compared to the performance in August 2019 (N121.99bn) revealed that total transactions decreased by 22.58 per cent.
The total value of transactions executed by domestic investors in August outperformed transactions executed by foreign investors by circa 18 per cent.
A further analysis of the total transactions executed between August and July (2020) revealed that total domestic transactions decreased by 19.16 per cent from N68.62bn in July to N55.47bn in August.
However, total foreign transactions increased by 12.69 per cent from N34.59bn (about $89.00m) to N38.98bn (about $100.81m) between July and August.
Further checks showed that institutional investors outperformed retail investors by four per cent.
A two-month comparison of domestic transactions revealed that retail transactions decreased by 18.22 per cent from N32.54bn in July 2020 to N26.61bn in August.
The institutional composition of the domestic market decreased by 20.01 per cent from N36.08bn in July to N28.86bn in August.
Highlights of the performance of the market over the last decade revealed that over a 13-year period, domestic transactions decreased by 72.30 per cent from N3.56tn in 2007 to N985bn in 2019 whilst foreign transactions increased by 53.08 per cent from N616bn to N943bn over the same period.
Domestic transactions accounted for about 51 per cent of the total transactions carried out in 2019, whilst foreign transactions accounted for about 49 per cent of the total transactions in the same period.
