President, Jacob Zuma

South Africa’s embattled President, Jacob Zuma, has blamed his country’s tepid economic growth in recent years on apartheid, describing it as “colonialism of a special type.”

Zuma told journalists in Pretoria on Tuesday that South Africa suffers from complex historic problems that are unique on the continent. Hear him: “We are trying to address the legacy of apartheid, and it’s going to be with us a long time,” said Zuma. At the same time it (South Africa) must be competing with countries that never had such a challenge.”

He argued that while South Africa has struggled to deal with its racially divided socio-economic landscape, “other countries in Africa never had a racially based economy.”
