Nigeria’s total power generation now hovers above 4, 000 megawatts (mw) as a result of substantial improvement in gas supply to thermal stations across the country, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has declared.
In a statement signed by its General Manager, Public Affairs, Seun Olagunju at the weekend, TCN said it was currently transmitting over 4000mw on regular basis to the 11 electricity Distribution companies (Discos) nationwide.
The statement coincided with the latest national grid power supply update released by the Presidential Taskforce on Power (PTFP) last Saturday which showed that peak generation was 4,240mw while actual energy generation was 3,662mw. According to the PTFP data, only 3,573mw was sent out for generation as 667mw may have been left as spinning reserve of which 89mw of it was lost during evacuation.
TCN, however, dismissed reports credited to the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) that the National Grid had suffered series of system collapses recently, describing it as misleading. The company, insist “there had been no such system collapses and AEDC was never restricted to power levels below its allocation.”
“It is public knowledge that the frequency of system collapses has been going down drastically following several equipment and infrastructure upgrade by TCN besides aggressive capacity building of the system operators,” Olagunju said in her statement, adding that it had recorded only four incidences so far this year.
TCN disclosed further that its System Operations has secured spinning reserve contracts of 295mw to provide stability and cushion the system in an event of sudden load/generation.
