The wife of the Lagos State governor, Mrs. Abimbola Fashola, has urged pupils of the Dansol High School, Ikeja, to shun acts capable of debasing moral and family values.
She gave this admonition at the Press Day and annual leadership lecture held in the school on Friday.
Speaking on “Restoration of Moral Values in our Youths,” she noted that beyond being educated, young people must learn to imbibe moral values and lead principled lives.
She said, “The ills in our society can mainly be traced to loss of values. If a person steals, lies, cheats or even fails to lead followers on the right path, it is because such a person has lost or does not have the moral values that are important to perform their obligations successfully.”
Noting that she was not averse to foreign culture and the use of modern technology, the governor’s wife however advised the pupils to adopt the good ones.
For instance, she urged them to use the Internet and other social media to acquire knowledge on competency and capacity building.
Fashola, while stressing on decency, diligence, hard work, humility, honesty and integrity, noted that if youngsters respected these values, the country would experience a rebirth.
She said, “Lack of these values has led to the rot spreading through the fabric of our society. However, it is never too late to make amends. Dare to resist all temptations to cut corners to achieve success, dare to believe in your ability to succeed through hard work and commitment to your dreams and dare not to place too much emphasis on material things, because it is not the true measure of success.”
The school Proprietress, Mrs. Adun Akinyemiju, who described the governor’s wife as a role model for youths, said the institution was committed to the vision of raising children that would make a difference in their generation.
She stated that apart from academics, the school imparts godliness into the pupils’ lives.
She listed the school’s corporate social responsibility to include presentation of a block of toilets to Agidingbi Grammar School, Ikeja and awards of scholarship to children from the Agidingbi community.
The chairman of the event, Mr. Lanre Fasheun, also said there was the need to restore the societal values, which he added, were fast ebbing in the society.
He pointed out that cultism was a product of debased societal value, adding that the pupils must obey instructions and emulate good role models.
