Following a court order obtained from the Federal High Court in Umuahia, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Abia State command, has destroyed illicit drugs worth several millions of naira at its office in Ogbor Hill, Aba.

The Chief Executive of the NDLEA, Col. Muhammad Abdallah (retd), on Monday said the drugs were publicly destroyed to send a signal to traffickers and drug dependent persons to desist from the hurtful and counter-productive activity.

The Abia State Commander of the NDLEA, Mr Bamidele Akinbade, who represented Abdallah, disclosed that the illicit drugs amounted to 9,110,252 kilogrammes of drugs comprising 6,574.116 kg of cannabis, 10.81 kg of heroin, 8.9832 kg of cocaine and 2,516.394 kg of psychotropic substances.

The exercise, he said, provided the command an opportunity to prove the successes recorded in its counter narcotic operations in the state.

The state Governor, Dr Okezie lkpeazu, represented by the Deputy Governor, Sir Ude Chukwu, commended the collaboration between the state government and the NDLEA in the fight against hard drugs and other related crimes.
